Blepharoplasty: the most demanded cosmetic surgery

What is blepharoplasty?

The main function of the eyelids is to protect the eye from external agents (excessive light, foreign bodies, etc.) and distribute the tear over the eyeball. But we must not forget that they also play a fundamental role in facial expression and aesthetics. Over time the tissues around the eye age, the skin becomes looser and tends to fall, giving our eyes a sad and tired look. Blepharoplasty is surgery that corrects excess skin and eye bags, both upper and lower eyelids. Through this surgery, we can rejuvenate the look.

Symptom

Youth is characterized by a clean, smooth, direct and lively look. This clarity of the look is lost with the inexorable passage of time, by the excessive growth of skin on the upper eyelids, or the appearance of fat “bags” in the lower eyelids, or wrinkles like crow’s feet, which are darkening and sadding the expression of the look. In some cases the excess skin is so important that the field of vision may be compromised. This natural process can be accelerated by hereditary factors, stress, sleep disorders, skin diseases, or excessive sun exposure.

Treatment of eye bags

The blepharoplasty is an outpatient surgical technique performed under local anesthesia and sedation, to remove eye bags. The upper blepharoplasty is performed through a small incision following the natural groove of the eyelid, so that we avoid scars. In the lower eyelid, if there is a large excess of skin, the external incision is also made following the natural lines, just below the eyelashes but if on the contrary the patient refers to “bags” but without excess skin, a internal incision through the conjunctiva without surgical scar. The first days after the intervention, there may be some degree of inflammation. If we carry out sessions of lymphatic drainage of the Vodder method during the first week of surgery, we help to eliminate the accumulation of fluids, shortening the postoperative period and favoring a quick recovery.

Prevention

We currently achieve excellent Cosmetic Eye Procedure results with blepharoplasty, palpebral cosmetic surgery, and the application of botulinum toxin to improve expression and periocular wrinkles. However, the results could be optimized, previously improving the texture of the skin, aged by the passage of time. At the Barraquer Ophthalmology Center, a state-of-the-art radiofrequency Thermage CPT System procedure is available. This is a non-surgical technology, designed to reaffirm the skin in a non-invasive and personalized way, achieving results in a single session; Obviously younger looking. After the treatment, which can be done at any time of the year and in any type or color of skin, we can follow the daily routine normally.
